Citizen Information Board (CIB)

Enabling the delivery of quality information, advice and advocacy services to the public

Background

The Citizens Information Board’s mission is to enable the delivery of quality information, advice and advocacy services to the public, through strong governance, systems and standards. We achieve this primarily by funding a national network of Citizens Information and Money Advice and Budgeting Service (MABS) offices, as well as supporting public information websites.

Volunteers play a vital role in running many Citizens Information Service offices. CIB wanted to provide external accreditation for volunteers who complete selected in-house training and development programmes.

Challenge

Securing validation for our eLearning courses through a third party education and training provider would have proved a time-consuming and bureaucratic process. From a cost-benefit perspective, it was not a realistic approach.

Volunteers play a vital role in running many Citizens Information Service offices. CIB wanted to provide external accreditation for volunteers who complete selected in-house training and development programmes.

Problems

  • No external accreditation for internal training programmes
  • Complex and time-consuming process from traditional accreditation providers
  • Reduced opportunity for volunteers to gain recognised credentials from their training

Solutions

  • Comprehensive technical and pedagogical review Enovation conducted a comprehensive technical and pedagogical review of selected CIB eLearning courses to assess whether they met recognised standards for technical performance, learner engagement, and pedagogical effectiveness. This review excluded the accuracy of the content as CIB are the subject matter experts, not Enovation.
  • Statement of validation CIB eLearning courses that met Enovation’s quality standards received a statement of validation. This validation is now displayed on the certificate awarded to learners who successfully complete an approved course.

Results

Qualitative impact:

  • While the impact is primarily qualitative, Enovation’s validation has boosted confidence among staff and volunteers in the quality and credibility of the Citizens Information Board’s eLearning courses.

  • The external endorsement also has also assisted CIB's services with attracting and retaining volunteer staff. In addition, the accreditation enhances volunteers’ professional credentials in seeking to further their careers with or outside of the Citizens Information.

Conclusion

Enovation’s validation has strengthened confidence in the quality and credibility of the Citizens Information Board’s eLearning courses among staff and volunteers. The external accreditation has also supported services in attracting and retaining volunteers by reinforcing the value of the training provided.

Furthermore, it enhances volunteers’ professional credentials, helping them pursue career opportunities both within and beyond the Citizens Information network. Overall, the validation demonstrates the broader organisational and professional benefits of maintaining externally accredited learning programmes.
