AP-HP calls on Enovation to digitalise the initial training of its 8,000 students

Context

Assistance Publique – Hôpitaux de Paris (AP-HP) is Europe’s leading university hospital centre. It is also France’s leading training centre, with more than 8,000 paramedical students enrolled each year in initial training at its 35 training institutes, in partnership with 7 universities in the Paris region. The digitalisation of training represents a major challenge for the Centre de Formation et du Développement des Compétences (CFDC), part of the AP-HP’s Human Resources Department, which trains the paramedical professionals of tomorrow.

Challenges

Digital transformation

With the development of a digital training master plan and the creation of the Digital Training Centre in 2016, the AP-HP initiated its digital transformation, which began with the creation of a Digital Workspace (ENT).

Pedagogical innovation

The acculturation of the 500 trainers to online training has been accelerated thanks to the CFDC’s desire to equip itself with a genuine digital training platform, opening the way to pedagogical innovation and the creation of a space for sharing and exchanging information common to all training institutes.

A flexible LMS

Moodle was the solution of choice because of its flexibility, its interoperability with existing university systems and the power of its native teaching tools. Following the award of a contract, the AP-HP decided to entrust the provision of support and services to Enovation, a renowned Official Moodle Partner.

Problems

  • An uninviting interface discouraging engagement and making everyday tasks frustrating.
  • A Digital Workspace with no real educational value
  • A lack of collaboration between the various AP-HP training institutes

Solutions

  • A fully customised Moodle theme
  • Improved UX with a user-friendly interface and a common homepage for all entities
  • Improved Automated User Management process

Results

The result of a collaborative effort, Enovation and the Digital Training Hub created a customized Moodle platform: Yikiforma, based on:

  • CUSTOM MOODLE THEME
A tailored Moodle theme designed to fit the AP-HP structure, built using the Edwiser theme. Enovation focused on CFDC’s core needs: breaking down silos between training institutes by creating a unified homepage for all entities and establishing a shared space for best practices and idea exchange. At the same time, each institute retains full flexibility to define and display its own pedagogical approach—by skill, teaching unit, or other structures.
  • MOODLE AND UX
With an improved user experience featuring a personalised interface and attractive design, Enovation has pushed the limits of Moodle to deliver a user-friendly experience for trainers, learners, and administrators—fully tailored to each profile.

  • AUTOMATED USER MANAGEMENT
Optimised user management: a plugin to facilitate the management and import of users into Moodle was developed by Enovation in compliance with data protection regulations (GDPR).

To streamline user management, Enovation developed a custom plugin that simplifies the import and management of users in Moodle—fully compliant with GDPR regulations.

This project involved hands-on training and ongoing support from Enovation, with a dedicated team actively listening to the AP-HP’s needs. Enovation guided the CFDC through each stage of its digital transformation: from the initial consultation, pilot site launches, and phased rollouts, to full platform implementation. Hosting and maintenance were also entrusted to Moodle’s technical experts.

Conclusion

Today, the platform counts over 9,000 registered users. Feedback from both trainers and students has been overwhelmingly positive, and the platform’s smooth rollout and adoption have been truly impressive.

A key driver of this success has been the network of around 90 digital ambassadors. Acting as local administrators within each institute, they’ve played a crucial role in promoting and supporting the digital transition.

Thanks to Moodle and Enovation, the CFDC has gained new freedom to innovate in its teaching methods. The shift toward hybrid learning has opened up fresh possibilities, including peer assessment, greater access to learning resources, and new interactive teaching activities. Both trainers and students have embraced these changes—and the momentum continues. The AP-HP is now exploring the extension of this digital transformation to include continuing education.
